New Zealand Oil & Gas Ltd has exploration acreage in New Zealand’s only hydrocarbon-producing region, the Taranaki Basin, and in the offshore Canterbury Basin. NZOG is actively looking for other opportunities in New Zealand and overseas.

2009-10 Summer/Autumn Drilling Programme

The Hoki-1 well was spudded on 5 March 2009.

This well is being drilled by the Kan Tan IV semi-submersible rig. Following Hoki it will drill at least two wells near the producing Tui oil field.

Canterbury Basin

PEP 38259 (Barque)

In October 2008 NZOG acquired 40% of Petroluem Exploration Permit (PEP) 38259, which lies in the offshore Canterbury Basin and contains the promising Barque prospect.

A 2D seismic survey was undertaken in February 2009 and the results of this survey are currently being evaluated. A decision whether or not to commit to drilling an exploration well is to be made by August 2010.

Taranaki Basin

PEP 38491 (Albacore)

(NZOG Interest 40%)

In August 2009, NZOG entered into an agreement to acquire a 40% stake in PEP 38491, which lies approximately 70kms north of New Plymouth. It contains a number of prospects, including Albacore, which was drilled by the jack-up rig ENSCO-107 in December 2009, with only traces of hydrocarbons found. The results are being evaluated to help assess remaining prospectivity of the northern graben region of the Taranaki Basin.

PEP 51988 (Mangaa)

(NZOG interest 100%)

NZOG's Permit in Time (PIT) application for a block immediately to the north of PEP 38491 was granted on 15 January 2010.  The permit work programme requires NZOG to undertake technical studies during the first 24 months of the permit term.

PEP 38401 (Hoki)

(NZOG Interest 10%)

In July 2009 NZOG agreed to acquire a 10% stake in this permit which lies 150 km northwest of New Plymouth and contains the large Hoki oil prospect. Hoki-1 will be drilled by the Kan Tan IV semi-submersible drilling rig in early 2010.

PEP 51311 (Gamma)

(NZOG Interest 100%)

In January 2009 NZOG was awarded a new exploration permit which lies to the west and south of the Kupe development. 500km of new 2D seismic shot in February 2009 has been comprehensively interpreted and a number of leads and prospects have been mapped. Continuing evaluation of these features is directed at identifying any further geological and geophysical studies required to support a drilling decision which is due in January 2011.

PML 38146 (Kupe)

(NZOG Interest 15%)
This Petroleum Mining Licence permit includes the Kupe Central Field.

It also contains a number of other potential structures containing oil or gas. The joint venture is conducting further geological and geophysical assessment of those structures.

PMP 38158 (Tui)

NZOG Interest 12.5%)
This Petroleum Mining Permit includes the producing Tui area oil fields.

The joint venture has refined its interpretation of the permit including a comprehensive reprocessing of the 3D seismic survey data. The semi-submersible drilling rig  Kan Tan IV will be used to drill at least two wells in the first half of 2010.

PEP 51321 (Kahurangi)

(NZOG Interest 18.9%)

In March 2009, NZOG and its Tui partners were awarded a new permit, which lies immediately to the south of PEP 38483. Vintage seismic data is being reprocessed using modern analysis techniques. The permit conditions require 200km of new 2D seismic to be acquired by March 2011.

PEP 38483 (Aihe and Bahamas)

(NZOG Interest 18.9%)

In December 2009, application was made to Crown Minerals for a change of conditions to allow more time to complete the evaluation of the Bahamas gas play and make a decision in relation to drilling.
